Fijian rugby international Ben Volavola is set to make a notable comeback to Super Rugby, having officially signed a one-year contract with the Queensland Reds for the 2026 season. The Queensland Rugby Union has highlighted Volavola’s significant experience and versatility, which allows him to compete effectively in various positions such as fly-half, inside centre, and fullback.
At the age of 34, Volavola boasts a remarkable rugby career, accumulating over 200 professional matches and earning 38 Test caps for Fiji. His international career includes participation in both the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups. Recently, he played with the Leicester Tigers in England, where he had the opportunity to work under former Waratahs coach Michael Cheika, an experience he says has reignited his enthusiasm for the game.
Upon his move to the Reds, Volavola expressed his excitement about joining a team he believes has the potential to contend for championships. “The biggest reason I found the Reds so appealing is believing that they have a squad that can challenge for some silverware,” he remarked. Additionally, the chance to return to Australia and be nearer to family, especially his two-year-old son, has significantly influenced his decision.
Volavola’s rugby journey began in Sydney, where he debuted professionally with the NSW Waratahs in 2013 before enjoying successful stints with clubs like the Crusaders and Melbourne Rebels. After his Australian career, he spent seven seasons playing in Europe, competing for various teams in France and England.
Looking forward, Volavola not only aims to make a valuable contribution to the Reds but also intends to maintain his international career. With his Australian eligibility being reactivated in 2026, he may have the opportunity to represent either Fiji or Australia in upcoming international competitions. “To play international rugby again and get myself to a Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2027 is definitely an ambition,” he stated, underscoring his commitment to achieving this goal.
