Addison County State’s Attorney Eva Vekos made headlines once again as she returned to court for a plea change in her ongoing DUI case. On Tuesday, Vekos entered a no contest plea to charges stemming from an incident on January 25, 2024, when Vermont State Police allege she arrived at a homicide scene under the influence of alcohol. By pleading no contest, Vekos will accept the repercussions of her actions without admitting guilt.

The court proceedings highlighted the controversy surrounding Vekos, particularly the significant duration of her case, which has extended nearly two years—far longer than the typical six-month timeframe for such cases. Following the plea, Judge’s orders placed Vekos on probation for six months, during which she is prohibited from excessive alcohol consumption and must regularly meet with a probation officer.

Assistant Attorney General Rosemary Kennedy expressed strong opposition to the plea change, asserting that it exemplified “special treatment” and emphasized that Vekos had not fully taken responsibility for her actions the night of her arrest. Defense attorney David Sleigh defended Vekos by stating that she had complied with all conditions of her license suspension and engaged in required alcohol counseling since the incident.

Despite her lack of prior criminal history, the case has ignited calls for Vekos’s resignation from both Vermont Democrats and Governor Phil Scott. They voiced concerns over her conduct and alleged mistreatment of crime victims during her tenure as state attorney. As the situation continues to unfold, no sentencing date has yet been announced, but Vekos faces potential penalties including a maximum of two years in prison and a fine of $750.

This situation serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with public office and the importance of accountability. While Vekos has expressed her intent to fulfill her obligations during this tumultuous period, the community’s sentiment remains divided on her future in office.
