Verdict Looms in Suva Supermarket Robbery Trial

The case against Leone Lesumailepanoni, a farmer accused of robbing the Alison Supermarket at Laucala Beach Estate near Suva, is nearing its conclusion. The trial, which commenced on October 6, 2025, involves four counts of aggravated robbery related to an incident that occurred on December 2 of the previous year.

Lesumailepanoni, alongside two accomplices, allegedly committed a violent robbery in which they restrained a taxi driver, leaving him in the boot of the vehicle, before entering the supermarket armed with cane knives. The robbers threatened both staff members and customers, ultimately stealing approximately $24,000 from a customer, $100 from another, and $1,650.35 from the supermarket itself.

During the latest court session, held last Thursday, Justice Thushara Rajasinghe heard closing submissions from both sides. State lawyer Simone Seruvatu presented six witnesses, while Legal Aid lawyer Timoci Varinava called upon Lesumailepanoni and an alibi witness to testify. Interestingly, Sosiveta Raura, who was initially charged with Lesumailepanoni, had his charges discontinued earlier this year.

As the trial wraps up, Lesumailepanoni remains in custody, with a judgment scheduled for November 20. The judicial process has drawn attention due to the nature of the crime, prompting discussions on public safety and the need for effective security in commercial areas to deter such incidents.

The ongoing legal proceedings serve as a crucial reminder of the justice system’s role in ensuring accountability and community safety. With each step taken in court, there is a shared hope that justice will prevail, reinforcing a commitment to protect customers and employees in public spaces.
