In Venice, the restoration of a mural by renowned street artist Banksy is underway, with scaffolding erected on June 17 to address the artwork’s deteriorating condition. The mural, titled “Migrant Child,” features a young boy in a life jacket holding a pink flare, a poignant symbol of the artist’s support for migrant rescue initiatives at sea.

Situated on the canal-facing side of a historic 17th-century palazzo, the mural has been vulnerable to the city’s infamous humidity, risking its potential disappearance. The building, which was uninhabited when Banksy created the mural, was purchased last year by Banca Ifis. The bank has committed to funding the full restoration, including the preservation of the artwork.

Banca Ifis plans to transform the Palazzo San Pantalon into an exhibition space that is anticipated to be connected with the Venice Biennale art fair. This project is being developed in collaboration with the prestigious Zaha Hadid Architects studio, further emphasizing the merging of contemporary art and historic preservation in Venice.

Commenting on the significance of this restoration, it reflects the city’s commitment to cultural heritage and showcases how corporate partnerships can support the arts. With the upcoming evolution of this space, there is hope that it will become a vibrant hub for art and creativity in the heart of Venice.
