Venezuela’s opposition leader, María Corina Machado, was taken into custody briefly after appearing at an anti-Maduro protest on Thursday, just a day before President Nicolás Maduro’s third inauguration. Machado’s political group, Comando Con Venezuela, announced the arrest, emphasizing that government forces violently intercepted her as she was leaving the protest in Chacao, where they reportedly fired at the motorcycles transporting her.
Following her brief detention, Comando Con Venezuela confirmed Machado’s release, countering claims that her arrest was fabricated. In response, Maduro’s government condemned the incident, labeling it a tactic to undermine its image. Information Minister Freddy Nanez characterized the situation as a distraction orchestrated by political foes.
Machado’s public appearance on Thursday marked her return after months of hiding due to a government crackdown on dissent following the contested July presidential election, which had declared Maduro the winner amid allegations of fraud. During her speech at the rally, she urged supporters to stand together, asserting, “They wanted us to fight each other, but Venezuela is united.” The crowd responded with chants of defiance, singing the national anthem in protest against Maduro’s regime.
