Fiji Chiefs Urge Strong Family Leadership to Tackle Youth Offenses

Veisorosorovi Under Scrutiny as Fiji Chiefs Push for Stronger Family Leadership

The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) is urging for enhanced leadership within families and communities in Fiji to tackle escalating social issues, particularly those relating to sexual offences, teenage pregnancies, and drug abuse. GCC Chair Ratu Viliame Seruvakula has voiced strong concerns regarding caregivers who are perpetrating serious crimes against children, pointing out that the traditional apology protocol, known as Veisorosorovi, is being misused.

Ratu Viliame stated, “It is something we sympathize with. We read in the media that the same people responsible for children’s welfare are committing these degrading acts.” He highlighted that Veisorosorovi was meant to settle minor disputes and should not apply to severe crimes like sexual assault. He emphasized that offenders must face appropriate legal consequences before any consideration is given to their reintegration into the community.

He called for strong family leadership, urging parents to actively protect their children and report any misconduct to authorities promptly. Ratu Viliame believes that parental involvement can significantly curb drug-related offences, thus lessening the burden on the Fiji Police Force.

The GCC is dedicated to working alongside law enforcement, religious groups, and partners in New Zealand to tackle youth and social challenges facing the nation. This proactive stance builds on prior discussions aimed at community-based solutions for issues like domestic violence and educational inequities. According to Ratu Viliame, fostering connections among families is essential for addressing these emerging social dilemmas.

Despite the gravity of these concerns, there remains an optimistic perspective as Ratu Viliame envisions a future where collaborative efforts grounded in cultural values result in resilient communities. His thoughts reflect the importance of empowerment and cooperation, suggesting that united actions can pave the way for a healthier and safer environment for future generations.
