Following the injury, Ram was treated initially at Tavua Hospital and later transferred to Lautoka Hospital for surgery. Sadly, after his operation, he encountered severe breathing complications, ultimately slipping into a coma, and has been incapacitated ever since. His family has raised concerns regarding potential medical negligence during his treatment, noting that Ram was capable of speaking, moving, and seeing before his surgery.
The Ministry of Health has indicated that it is actively conducting an internal review of Ram’s clinical records to address these claims. Jyotika Chand, Executive Assistant at the Office of the Minister for Health and Medical Services, emphasized that the Ministry is handling the situation with the utmost seriousness and in accordance with established clinical governance processes.
In light of the family’s allegations, they have expressed frustration over the lack of clear explanations from doctors at Lautoka Hospital regarding the deterioration of Ram’s condition, particularly questioning how a leg injury could lead to such severe consequences.
In response to inquiries about their role in the incident, the Vatukoula Gold Mine stated that Mr. Ram was promptly transported to medical facilities for treatment immediately after the accident, and an internal investigation is already underway to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The mine reiterated its commitment to employee safety and ongoing support for Ram’s family during this difficult time.
