Vanuatu United FC celebrated their first victory of the season with a commendable performance against Bula FC during Round 3 of the competition. Although they had shown promise in their previous two matches, the win marked a significant turnaround for the team, which had yet to secure points prior.
Head coach Lars Hopp was unable to lead the team from the sidelines due to a suspension stemming from a prior match against South Melbourne FC, during which three of his players, including key midfielder William Cardona, also received red cards.
Bula FC, sitting slightly higher in the standings before the match, started strong. Zacariah Harang was quick to put pressure on Vanuatu United’s goalkeeper Matt Acton with a low shot. However, adverse weather conditions, including cooler temperatures and rain, appeared to affect Bula FC’s momentum, allowing Vanuatu United to settle into the game.
Owen Smith ignited the team’s chances, taking a free kick that went high. The pivotal moment came with forward Alex Saniel, who showcased his talent by scoring the opening goal. After a strong run and assist from Bill Kaltack, Saniel found the back of the net, marking his fifth goal of the season.
In the second half, Roy Krishna of Bula FC had an opportunity to equalize but was thwarted by Acton and then hit the post after a follow-up attempt. Shortly after this missed chance, Vanuatu United struck again through Kathy Iamak, who scored following a swift break and set-up from Owen Smith. Initially ruled offside, a VAR review confirmed the goal, thrilling Vanuatu United fans at Olympic Park.
Bula FC increased their efforts to get back into the match but were unable to break through Vanuatu United’s resilient defense. Although Bula hit the woodwork twice late on, Vanuatu United’s solid defensive display ensured they held on for a vital victory, keeping their aspirations for a top-four finish alive.
This win not only boosts Vanuatu United’s confidence but also reflects the potential within the team to overcome adversity, setting a hopeful tone for the upcoming matches in their season.
