Vanuatu police are actively pursuing armed robbers behind a daring daytime heist that resulted in the theft of $AUD600,000 in cash from Bauerfield International Airport. According to initial investigations, the assailants wielded firearms to intimidate staff of a money transfer company situated in the airport’s cargo terminal, successfully escaping in a tinted white van.
Police Commissioner Kalshem Bongran has called on the local community to assist in identifying the two individuals suspected of carrying out this brazen robbery. At the time of the incident, the funds were undergoing weighing and verification by Customs officials, indicating the organized nature of the crime.
Remarkably, there were no injuries reported during this shocking event, although it has raised serious concerns about airport security measures. Officials are describing the robbery as an unprecedented incident in Vanuatu’s crime history.
On a more positive note, airport operations have continued uninterrupted for both international and domestic flights following the robbery. This resilience reflects a strong commitment to safety and security in the region, illustrating that despite facing such challenges, Vanuatu remains dedicated to maintaining a secure environment for travelers.
