Vanderbilt’s three-game winning streak has come to an end following a 27-24 defeat against Texas at FirstBank Stadium. Despite the loss, the Commodores remain in contention for a potential bowl game with a record of 5-3 and 2-2 in the SEC.
Vanderbilt took an early lead with an 18-yard touchdown run from quarterback Diego Pavia in the first quarter. However, Texas responded with three consecutive touchdowns, extending their lead before a 54-yard field goal from Brock Taylor allowed Vanderbilt to narrow the gap to 21-10 by halftime.
In the third quarter, Vanderbilt closed the deficit to 24-17 with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Pavia to Junior Sherrill. Unfortunately, an interception thrown by Pavia led to a late field goal by Texas, extending their lead. Pavia later connected on a short touchdown pass to Eli Stowers, but Texas secured the victory by recovering an onside kick.
Quinn Ewers had a standout performance for Texas, throwing for 288 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions, while Pavia finished the game with 143 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.
In playing updates, Vanderbilt made efforts to rally late, with Pavia’s touchdown pass to Stowers cutting Texas’ lead to 27-24 with only seconds remaining in the game. Earlier, Bert Auburn’s field goal gave Texas a cushion with a score of 27-17 following a key interception by Pavia.
Halftime saw Texas leading 21-10, bolstered by Ewers’ efficient play, which included multiple touchdown passes. Vanderbilt’s field goal by Taylor marked a historic achievement as it reflected his proficiency from long distances throughout the season.
