Vice President JD Vance marked the 250th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps on Saturday in a celebration at Camp Pendleton, California. The event featured a significant live artillery demonstration, touted as the largest in a decade on the continental U.S. This extensive showcase included fighter jets, helicopters, Navy ships, and live fire from a towed howitzer. However, the demonstration drew criticism from California Governor Gavin Newsom, who expressed concerns over safety for drivers on nearby Interstate 5.

Newsom ordered a closure of a portion of the highway, citing “extreme life safety risk and distraction to drivers” due to the loud and sudden explosions from the exercise. He condemned the decision to fire live rounds over a busy highway as both dangerous and irresponsible. In response, Vance’s office defended the event, stating that the Marine Corps considered the demonstration to be a safe, established practice integral to routine training. William Martin, Vance’s communications director, emphasized that opposition to military training exercises reflects on Newsom’s failures as a governor.

During his address at Camp Pendleton, Vance, who is the first Marine to hold the vice presidency, reminisced about his military service and the influence it has had on shaping his life and career. He articulated a strong message against what he termed “woke” aspects of the military, arguing that strength lies in unity and common purpose rather than diversity. His sentiments echoed those of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who remarked that unity of purpose, rather than diversity, is the real source of strength for the armed forces.

Vance also relayed a message from President Donald Trump, highlighting support for the troops amid ongoing government shutdown negotiations, which have affected federal employees. He emphasized Trump’s commitment to ensuring that military personnel would be compensated appropriately, despite the challenges stemming from discussions in Congress.

This event underscores the enduring strength and unity of the Marine Corps, while simultaneously spotlighting ongoing political tensions regarding military policies and governance. The celebration not only honors over two centuries of service but also serves as a reminder of the complex realities facing military personnel and leadership today.
