A house in Naikabula, Lautoka, was completely destroyed by a structural fire, prompting the National Fire Authority (NFA) to issue a critical warning to property owners about the dangers associated with unattended buildings. Firefighters from the Lautoka Fire Station were dispatched to the blaze at 1:18 PM on February 24, arriving within seven minutes to find the three-bedroom residence fully engulfed in flames.

Using two hose lines and a nearby hydrant to replenish their equipment, the firefighting teams worked swiftly and managed to bring the fire under control by 1:30 PM. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported as a result of the incident.

NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane highlighted the increased risks associated with vacant and unmonitored properties. He pointed out that issues such as deteriorating electrical systems, unauthorized entry, accumulation of waste, overgrown vegetation, and the threat of arson contribute to these dangers. Sowane urged homeowners—particularly those residing overseas—to take responsibility for regular maintenance and security measures for their properties to help prevent such situations.

He also expressed concern that the house had been ablaze for approximately an hour before emergency services were alerted. “Time is a decisive factor in firefighting. The earlier we are notified, the greater the chance of containing the fire,” he emphasized.

Currently, a formal investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire. This incident serves as a crucial reminder for property owners to stay vigilant and proactive in managing their unoccupied properties, ultimately helping to prevent devastating incidents in the future. The NFA’s warning underscores the importance of timely communication in emergency scenarios, which can significantly impact the efficacy of firefighting efforts.
