An Uxbridge police officer tragically lost their life in a collision on Route 146 early Wednesday morning. The officer, who has yet to be publicly identified, was on duty and assisting another driver on the northbound side of the highway when the accident occurred at approximately 12:40 a.m. Despite the prompt lifesaving efforts from emergency responders, the officer ultimately succumbed to the injuries sustained in the incident.
Uxbridge Police Chief Marc Montminy expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “This is a devastating loss for our department and our community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the officer’s family, loved ones, and fellow officers during this incredibly difficult time.” In response to the tragedy, counseling services are being offered to police officers and other staff members to help them cope with their grief.
Following the incident, Route 146 is expected to remain closed for several hours as investigations continue. More than five hours after the crash, a solemn procession was held, led by Massachusetts State Police and followed by the medical examiner and fellow officers, honoring the fallen officer.
As details about the crash continue to unfold, it remains unclear how many vehicles were involved. Roads throughout Massachusetts have been reported as icy due to freezing rain overnight, contributing to the hazardous driving conditions.
This incident highlights the risks that law enforcement officers face daily while serving their communities. As the investigation progresses, the Uxbridge community is coming together to support the officer’s family during this tragic time.
