UTSA’s remarkable season faced a setback as they fell to UCLA 5-2 in Game 1 of the Super Regional. This marks a historic moment as it is UTSA’s first-ever appearance in a Super Regional.
The Roadrunners jumped to an early lead when Mason Lytle launched a homer on the second pitch of the game. However, despite their promising start, UTSA managed only one hit in the innings that followed. They extended their lead to 2-0 in the second inning when Caden Miller boldly stole home while the UCLA pitcher was distracted.
Defensively, UTSA showcased resilience by escaping a bases-loaded situation with a critical double play, preventing any Bruins from scoring. However, complications arose in the third inning as UCLA’s Mulivai Levu tied the game with an RBI double followed by a sacrifice groundout.
UCLA gained their first lead in the fourth inning with an RBI sacrifice fly and later solidified their position in the eighth when Roman Martin delivered a bases-clearing triple, bringing the score to 5-2.
Despite their reputation for comebacks, the Roadrunners failed to rally in the final inning, going down in order.
While the loss is disappointing, UTSA’s journey to the Super Regional highlights a season of significant achievement and establishes a foundation for future success. The Roadrunners demonstrated both skill and tenacity throughout the game, leaving fans hopeful for their performance in the upcoming matches.
