The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is launching a pioneering College of AI, Cyber, and Computing, which is set to drive innovation and workforce development in response to the growing demand for specialists in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data science. President Taylor Eighmy emphasized that the new college will cultivate thought leadership and promote collaborations across various disciplines to navigate the future shaped by technological advancements.
As the demand for professionals in fields such as AI and cybersecurity rises, the college plays a crucial role in workforce development. A report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates job opportunities in these areas will rise significantly, with growth rates exceeding 35% by 2031. This new educational institution builds on the successful foundation of the UTSA School of Data Science, founded in 2018, and aims to meet the increasing demand for skilled professionals in San Antonio’s growing tech corridor.
Rooted in the downtown expansion of UTSA, the college aims to establish strong connections with industry and government partners, further positioning San Antonio as a vital hub for information security, second only to Washington, D.C. Provost Heather Shipley noted that by aligning academic programs with workforce needs, the college will create exceptional opportunities for students while enhancing the city’s reputation as a center for talent and innovation.
The College of AI, Cyber, and Computing will feature specialized departments that encompass computer science, computer engineering, information systems and cybersecurity, and data science and statistics. Each department will provide comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs designed to equip students with the critical skills needed for high-demand careers. With over 5,000 students currently enrolled in related programs, the college will respond proactively to societal demands and technological advancements.
The college will also enhance research and interdisciplinary collaboration, building connections with notable centers such as the UTSA AI Consortium for Human Well-Being and the Open Cloud Institute. By integrating existing research centers focused on cybersecurity, the new college will promote innovation and tackle pressing societal challenges, making significant contributions to the fields of AI, data science, and cybersecurity.
In this transformative phase, UTSA is not only expanding educational offerings but also reinforcing its commitment to be at the forefront of driving economic growth and technological advancement in San Antonio and beyond. The establishment of the College of AI, Cyber, and Computing symbolizes a bright future where education meets industry demands, nurturing the next generation of innovators and leaders in technology.
This initiative reflects a hopeful outlook for both students and the broader tech community in San Antonio, showcasing the university’s dedication to creating a skilled workforce that is prepared for the challenges and opportunities of an evolving digital landscape.
