UTSA Leaders Champion Mental Health Awareness on World Mental Health Day

On October 10, 2024, UTSA President Taylor Eighmy, along with Provost Heather Shipley, Chief Enterprise Development Officer Veronica Salazar, Faculty Senate Chair Alex Godet, and Staff Senate Chair Justin Marmolejo, sent an email to all faculty and staff in recognition of World Mental Health Day. This global observance aims to heighten awareness surrounding critical mental health issues and to motivate actions that lead to enduring change.

The university leaders emphasized the importance of creating a supportive environment for well-being and encouraged staff and faculty to show consistent care for one another. They urged everyone to routinely check in with colleagues and friends, ensuring that no one feels isolated.

The email also highlighted UTSA’s available resources for mental health and well-being initiatives. Among these, a new well-being task force has been formed to enhance the existing programs. Notable resources include:

– The Deer Oaks Employee Assistance Program, which offers confidential counseling and support services for faculty and staff. Their toll-free hotline is accessible 24/7 at (888) 993-7650.
– Healthy Minds at Work, a complimentary online seminar launching on October 10, aimed at fostering supportive workplaces that boost employee engagement and resilience.
– The iConnectYou app, providing around-the-clock professional support via call, video, or text.
– The 988 Lifeline, which offers free and confidential support for individuals in distress, available 24/7.

The leaders concluded the message by acknowledging the ongoing contributions of every member of the UTSA community towards fostering a culture of well-being, reinforcing their commitment to making UTSA a positive and supportive environment for work, learning, and discovery.
