The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) has announced the establishment of a groundbreaking College of AI, Cyber, and Computing, which is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of technology and innovation. President Taylor Eighmy emphasized that this new college positions UTSA as a leader in thought leadership, new technologies, transdisciplinary collaboration, and future applications in artificial intelligence (AI), computing, and data science. This initiative is crucial not only for the university but also for the workforce and economic development of San Antonio, the state, and the nation.
One of the primary objectives of the college is to address the increasing demand for professionals skilled in AI, cybersecurity, computing, and data science. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job openings in data science and cybersecurity are expected to grow by 35% or more by 2031, highlighting the urgent need for better-trained individuals in these sectors.
Building on the foundation laid by the UTSA School of Data Science, which began operations in 2018, the new college will serve as a responsive educational hub. It is strategically located in the downtown area, which enhances UTSA’s relationships with industry and government partners in the San Antonio tech corridor.
UTSA Provost Heather Shipley noted that the downtown anchor aligns the college’s programs with workforce needs, creating exceptional opportunities for students while promoting San Antonio as an emerging hub for talent and innovation.
The college plans to house four specialized departments, each focusing on a unique aspect of the computing landscape. These will include Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems and Cybersecurity, and Data Science and Statistics. Together, they will oversee a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate programs designed to equip students for in-demand careers while strengthening UTSA’s reputation as a research institution.
Additionally, the college will enhance students’ learning experiences through hands-on opportunities such as internships and real-world projects, ensuring they acquire relevant skills as they enter the workforce.
The collaboration between various research centers within the college will further enrich the academic environment. The newly formed college aligns with the UTSA AI Consortium for Human Well-Being and the Open Cloud Institute, among others, to foster innovation and address social challenges through collective expertise.
By consolidating resources and expertise, the college aims to secure competitive funding and promote impactful partnerships, reinforcing UTSA’s standing as a national leader in addressing the digital and interconnected world’s challenges.
