Utah’s Stunning Stained Glass Ceiling: A Hidden Treasure Awaits

SALT LAKE CITY — A stunning stained glass artwork showcasing Utah’s natural beauty and iconic symbols is taking shape in a building on Capitol Hill. When completed, visitors will be able to gaze up at a remarkable stained-glass ceiling that features renowned landscapes and flora from across the state.

The artwork captures the essence of Utah with depictions of famous sites, including the Valley of the Gods, Rainbow Bridge, Mount Olympus, and the Uintah National Forest. Among the flowers depicted are the vibrant Indian Paintbrush, sagebrush, Sego Lilies, and Prickly Pear Cactus. The ceiling also features local wildlife such as seagulls and elk, along with a crystal sun that casts colorful rainbow prisms onto the floor below.

The artist behind this creation, Dallin Orr from Holdman Studios, revealed that there are hidden symbols woven throughout the piece, adding layers of intrigue. “In the lead-line shape, we have illustrations of significant symbols of Utah,” he mentioned while pointing out a Utahraptor skull and other hidden elements like a kokopelli and a dragonfly.

Set to cost $1.6 million, this impressive stained glass installation will be a centerpiece of the Utah State Capitol’s North Building, which is set to house a new state history museum when it opens its doors in 2026. Dana Jones, Executive Director of the Capitol Preservation Board, expressed her vision of providing visitors with a “wow moment” upon entering the space.

Orr aimed to create a harmonious balance in the artwork, representing the diverse landscapes of Utah from the high tundra to the arid desert. “I tried to establish a cohesive harmonious balance surrounding that sun,” he explained, ensuring that all of Utah’s iconic symbols are evenly distributed throughout the design.

This project not only aims to celebrate Utah’s rich heritage and scenery but also promises to enhance the cultural landscape of the Capitol grounds, inviting visitors to connect with the state’s natural wonders in an innovative way.
