SALT LAKE CITY – The beloved holiday film “Home Alone” has inspired a unique and extravagant project by a homebuilder in Utah, who has invested $7 million to create a replica of the iconic McCallister family home. Nathan Shaffer, a partner at Strata Construction, acknowledges that while some might view this venture as unconventional, it’s a tribute to a movie that many cherish from their childhood.
The impressive residence, featuring six bedrooms and eight and a half bathrooms, will be showcased in the upcoming St. George parade of homes this February. Shaffer’s design not only reflects the aesthetic elements of the movie, but it also includes eye-catching details, such as a plumbing van adorned with a playful “Wet Bandits” sticker.
According to Shaffer, the process of creating the home resonates with the nostalgic feelings many have for the film. He recalls how viewers connected with Kevin McCallister’s adventurous spirit of independence. Leading up to the parade, Shaffer’s team plans to host community events where visitors of all ages can immerse themselves in the whimsical world of the film and engage their creativity by identifying various elements related to the movie.
Architect Josh Warner emphasized that while the home’s exterior closely resembles the McCallister house, the interior design incorporates approximately 60 to 70% features from the real Chicago home, using details from an online listing when the property was available for sale. The Utah creation also includes modern amenities not found in the original, like an indoor pickleball court, a swimming pool, and a spacious pantry.
Warner expressed the rewarding challenge of designing a Georgian-style home, as he had never worked on one before. Despite the elaborate design and high price tag, Shaffer acknowledges that the unique nature of this home means it appeals to a niche market.
This innovative project not only highlights the impact of cinematic nostalgia but also brings the community together to celebrate creativity and imagination.
