Utah Utes Look to Rebound Against Grand Canyon in Palm Desert Acrisure Series

The Utah Runnin’ Utes are set to participate in the Acrisure Series basketball event, as they aim to bounce back from a disappointing loss against Cal Poly. The team will travel to Palm Desert, California, where they will play against Grand Canyon University on Tuesday night at 10 p.m. MST, broadcasted on CBS Sports Network.

Following a tough 92-85 defeat at home to Cal Poly, the Utes hope to focus on improvement and address defensive lapses that have been evident this season. Coach Alex Jensen highlighted the need for his players to take individual accountability on defense, especially after Cal Poly shot 50%, including 56% from three-point range. Junior forward Keanu Dawes emphasized a positive outlook, stating that while the loss was unwanted, it serves as an opportunity for learning in the early stages of the season.

Currently holding a 5-1 record, Utah has faced a range of challenges so far, including a performance against Weber State where they had to fight back from a ten-point deficit to secure victory. Despite recent wins, the Utes have experienced inconsistencies, a trend they aim to correct before entering the Acrisure Series.

Grand Canyon, which joined the Mountain West Conference this season, will be a formidable opponent. The Lopes come with a strong record of making the NCAA Tournament in four out of the last five years as members of the WAC and present a unique challenge with their size and skill. They currently sit at 3-2 and are rated higher than the Utes in the KenPom rankings, positioning them as tough contenders.

Grand Canyon has been preparing for the Utes, looking to leverage their length and scoring ability, with key players like Jaden Henley and Makaih Williams ready to make an impact. Henley leads the Lopes in scoring and will be a primary focus for Utah’s defense.

Looking ahead, the Utes may also face either Iowa or Ole Miss on Wednesday, both of whom are unbeaten this season and pose their own challenges. Iowa has clinched impressive wins, while Ole Miss features players averaging over 14 points per game.

The outcomes in California will be pivotal for Utah as they seek to regain momentum after a disappointing home loss and sharpen their skills for the remainder of the season. A win against Grand Canyon will set them up for a competitive matchup against either Iowa or Ole Miss, further testing their growth and resilience in tough non-conference play.
