The NHL team in Salt Lake City has officially adopted the name the Utah Mammoth, concluding a lengthy and intricate naming process that began following the Arizona Coyotes’ transition to the Utah Hockey Club last year.
The franchise unveiled its new identity through a video shared on social media platform X on Wednesday, showcasing not only the name but also the team’s fresh jerseys and logo. The primary colors for the Mammoth will be black, white, and light blue, embracing a modern and dynamic aesthetic.
Fans had anticipated the name for some time, as some sharp-eyed followers noticed a change on the team’s YouTube account to @UtahMammoth back in April. Despite this leak, the franchise maintained silence on whether it was genuine until the official announcement.
The journey to finalizing the name was anything but straightforward. Initially, the Hockey Club was a temporary title introduced last summer, accompanied by 20 potential names for a fan vote. These options primarily featured snow and mountain themes, including the Mammoth, along with contenders like the Swam, Fury, and Hive. Following the initial voting, the choices were narrowed down to six finalists: the existing Hockey Club, the Mammoth, the Yeti, the Outlaws, the Venom, and the Blizzard.
However, the process took a twist when copyright issues with the Yeti cooler company prompted the team to eliminate it from consideration. This led to a second round of voting, which included the Hockey Club, the Mammoth, and a new option, the Wasatch, named after the nearby mountain range. Due to backlash from fans, the Wasatch was replaced on the ballot with the Outlaws before voting concluded.
After three rounds of voting and a total of 21 names put forward, the Mammoth has emerged victorious. This decision allows the community to rally together under a unified identity, generating excitement for the upcoming NHL season.
The Utah Mammoth is poised to create a vibrant team culture and foster community support, signaling a new era for hockey in Salt Lake City. With the name now solidified, fans can look forward to an invigorating experience as the Mammoth take to the ice, representing the state with pride.
