Utah Hockey Club Transforms into Utah Mammoth: A New Era Begins

The Utah Hockey Club has officially rebranded itself as the Utah Mammoth, a name that reflects both the region’s history and community spirit. Announced on Wednesday, the change follows a 13-month process that saw extensive fan engagement, including four rounds of voting where a staggering 850,000 ballots were cast.

The choice of “Mammoth” draws inspiration from the prehistoric giants that once roamed Utah over 10,000 years ago. Ryan and Ashley Smith, the owners of the team, emphasized their commitment to building a team that resonates with the people of Utah. “The community chose the Utah Mammoth brand, and it stands as a symbol of who we are, where we came from, and the unstoppable force we’re building together,” they stated.

Originally playing as the Utah Hockey Club, a temporary name adopted after the franchise was relocated from Arizona in April 2024, the team has now solidified its identity. The new jerseys will maintain the existing color scheme of rock black, salt white, and mountain blue, with intricate designs that pay homage to the local geography. The home jerseys feature a logo that incorporates elements such as the Wasatch Mountain Range and the silhouette of Utah itself, emphasizing the team’s connection to its home state.

Notably, mammoth fossils have been discovered throughout Utah, underscoring the relevance of the name. These ancient creatures, which stood over 14 feet tall and weighed up to 22,000 pounds, symbolize strength and resilience—qualities the team seeks to embody.

The selection process for the name was complex, involving trademark complications, particularly with the name “Yeti,” which the team had to abandon because of trademark disputes. Ultimately, fan voting narrowed it down to the final candidates: Utah Mammoth, Utah Wasatch, and Utah Hockey Club, with Mammoth emerging as the preferred choice.

In addition to the new identity, limited Mammoth merchandise will be available, with the full range, including jerseys, set to be released closer to the 2025-26 NHL season. As the Mammoth prepares for future drafts, expectations are high for continued community engagement and excitement.

This rebirth not only enhances the team’s visibility but also signifies a hopeful future filled with opportunities. The name “Mammoth” promises to inspire fans and players alike, as a community united under a powerful brand.
