HONOLULU, HI — USF head coach Alex Golesh highlighted the contrasting mindsets often seen at bowl games, where one team is typically just happy to participate while the other is focused on securing a victory. After a significant 4,700-mile journey, Golesh expressed his hopes for his team to return from Honolulu with a win against San Jose State in the Hawaii Bowl.
Golesh expressed gratitude for the support from the operations team and the administration, which allowed the team to enjoy a comfortable experience during their trip. “The adjustment is over. Now we’ve gotta go to work and prepare as we would for a normal game,” he stated in a recent press conference.
For USF receiver Sean Atkins, tonight marks a special occasion as it will be his final game wearing a Bulls jersey. The former walk-on has authored an impressive career, securing the record for the most receptions in USF history with 189. Reflecting on the experience of being in Hawaii, Atkins commented, “I can’t believe that this place is real…I’m just grateful to be here, grateful for the teammates, and really excited to be here.”
The Bulls’ week in Hawaii has included memorable activities such as a guided tour of Pearl Harbor and spreading festive cheer at a local Shriners Children’s Hospital. Linebacker Mac Harris emphasized the importance of these experiences in fostering a positive culture within the team. “We’re building a culture here…to be in those playoff games that coach was talking about,” Harris, who led the team in tackles and sacks, mentioned.
Golesh also noted the growth potential this game presents for the team, expressing his excitement about the opportunity and the positive atmosphere amongst the players. “Really excited, again, grateful to be here, and I know our guys are as well,” he said.
USF (6-6) is set to face San Jose State (7-5) at 8 p.m. on December 24, broadcasting live on ESPN. This matchup holds significance, as the Bulls previously secured a victory against San Jose State in their only prior meeting in 2017, winning 42-22.
This bowl game presents a great opportunity for the Bulls, not only to build on their season but to create lasting memories and growth as a program. The experiences and connections formed off the field could be as impactful as the game itself, promoting a hopeful future for USF football.
