Fiji is set to enhance its efforts against maritime crime, thanks to a significant funding boost of USD $500,000 from the United States. This initiative aims to focus on illegal fishing and various transnational threats that plague the Pacific waters.
During a recent visit to Fiji, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau unveiled the funding, which will be administered in collaboration with Congress and allocated to the Republic of Fiji Navy. This financial assistance will enable the Navy to acquire advanced and secure communications technology, crucial for conducting maritime security operations and ensuring effective disaster response.
“The United States is committed to working with our Pacific partners to counter drug trafficking, illegal fishing, and transnational crime that threaten the region’s security and prosperity,” stated Deputy Secretary Landau. He emphasized that by bolstering Fiji’s capacity to safeguard its sovereignty and natural resources, the U.S. is also advancing the vision of a free and open Pacific—a strategy beneficial not just for Fiji but for the entire region.
The introduction of this new technology aims to enhance the interoperability of U.S.-donated Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats, as well as support the ongoing refurbishment of the boat ramp at Stanley Brown Naval Base. Improved communication capabilities will boost coordination during missions aimed at dismantling organized crime networks, combating drug trafficking, and addressing illegal fishing—activities that pose significant threats to both maritime and national security across the Pacific.
As a key security ally in the region, Fiji stands to gain substantially from these upgraded capabilities. This U.S. security assistance not only empowers Fiji to address maritime threats more effectively but also reinforces American leadership and shared interests within the Pacific community.
