Fiji is poised to significantly bolster its fight against maritime crime with a generous funding infusion of USD $500,000 from the United States. This funding initiative is strategically designed to combat illegal fishing and other transnational threats that jeopardize security in the Pacific waters.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau announced the funding during his recent visit to Fiji, outlining that the allocation will be managed in partnership with Congress and directed to the Republic of Fiji Navy. The financial support is earmarked for acquiring advanced and secure communications technology, vital for enhancing maritime security operations and improving disaster response effectiveness.
“The United States is committed to working with our Pacific partners to counter drug trafficking, illegal fishing, and transnational crime that threaten the region’s security and prosperity,” stated Deputy Secretary Landau. He highlighted that by strengthening Fiji’s capacity to protect its sovereignty and natural resources, the U.S. is also advancing the vision of a free and open Pacific, which benefits not only Fiji but the entire region.
The integration of this new technology aims to improve the interoperability of U.S.-donated Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats and aid in the refurbishment of the boat ramp at Stanley Brown Naval Base. Enhanced communication capabilities will facilitate better coordination during missions to dismantle organized crime syndicates, combat drug trafficking, and confront illegal fishing—activities that present significant risks to maritime and national security across the Pacific.
