The United States has announced a new funding initiative in partnership with Congress, allocating $500,000 to enhance the Republic of Fiji Navy’s capabilities. This investment is aimed at improving maritime security and disaster response with the introduction of advanced communications technology.
This funding is intended to empower Fiji in the fight against transnational crime, including drug trafficking and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing within its vast maritime territory. Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to working with Pacific nations to address threats to regional security and economic stability. He pointed out that strengthening Fiji’s capacity to protect its sovereignty and natural resources is a key aspect of the broader objective of maintaining a free and open Pacific.
The initiative marks a continuation of U.S. efforts to provide security assistance to Fiji’s naval forces, which is vital for effective coordination in maritime operations targeting organized crime and illegal fishing activities. The introduction of new technology is expected to enhance interoperability with U.S.-donated Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats and support recent upgrades at the Stanley Brown Naval Base, including the refurbishment of the boat ramp.
