U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau has underscored that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East will not deter the United States from advancing its economic and security interests in the Pacific region. In a recent social media post, Landau stated, “The current conflict in the Middle East doesn’t stop American diplomacy in the rest of the world.”
Landau’s remarks followed his diplomatic trip to the South Pacific from February 26 to March 2, 2023, which came after he hosted the Pacific Agenda investment summit in Honolulu, where he united senior officials from 16 Pacific Islands with members of the American private sector.
During his time in Tonga, Landau held significant discussions with prominent figures, including King Tupou VI and Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua. He acknowledged Tonga’s unique history, stating, “Tonga was never colonized and has been ruled by kings for over 1000 years. Our two countries are committed to boosting economic and security cooperation.”
A key highlight of Landau’s visit was the signing of an enhanced “ship rider” agreement, aimed at bolstering collaboration between the U.S. Coast Guard and Tongan authorities to reinforce maritime security in the region.
In Fiji, he met with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to explore deeper cooperation on naval affairs and economic development. Their discussions led to the signing of a US$12 million Compact Development Funding Agreement, intended to promote investment in Fiji, with support from the Millennium Challenge Corporation, a U.S. government foreign assistance agency.
Additionally, Landau’s itinerary included discussions in Apia, Samoa, where he highlighted shared economic and security interests, emphasizing the close relationship with American Samoa. The visit concluded with the signing of an Open Skies agreement and a thorough review of port security operations, demonstrating the U.S.’s commitment to enhancing safety and trade across the region.
This proactive diplomatic engagement reflects the United States’ dedication to strengthening ties and partnerships in the South Pacific, showcasing a commitment to collaboration and stability despite global challenges.
