Community advocate Lesi Vanuavou has taken to social media to amplify a urgent call from residents of Tavua’s interior for immediate assistance in constructing a semi-permanent, flood-resistant bridge at Tabutabu. The plea comes from villagers in Nadelei and the surrounding farming communities, who have expressed their frustration over the repeated damage caused by flash flooding in the area.

A recent flash flood occurred after heavy rain, further highlighting the vulnerability of the current crossing. In his online post, Mr. Vanuavou conveyed the heartfelt concerns of the people, emphasizing their need for a more durable structural solution. He pointed out that years of minor repairs have failed to provide a lasting fix to the bridge, which struggles to withstand even slight increases in water flow during moderate to heavy rainfall.

Mr. Vanuavou underscored the importance of the bridge as vital infrastructure for the community, facilitating access for farmers, families, school children, and emergency services. He explained that without a reliable crossing, their safety, livelihoods, and basic mobility are at significant risk.

He urged authorities, stakeholders, and development partners to take immediate action to address this urgent need. The post included distressing images taken by concerned villagers that clearly illustrate the severity of the situation. Mr. Vanuavou emphasized the importance of collaboration, calling on all relevant entities to support the community in securing a functional bridge that will serve as a lifeline for its residents.
