Urban Meyer Says No Coaching Return, But His Influence Endures in College Football

Urban Meyer has not stepped onto the college football sidelines since departing Ohio State in 2018. His brief venture into the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars lasted just 13 games in 2021, culminating in a disappointing 2-11 record before he was let go.

Meyer stands out as one of the most distinguished coaches in college football history, claiming three national championships during his career—two with the University of Florida in 2006 and 2008, and another with Ohio State in 2014. His successful tenure began at Utah, where he guided the team to an undefeated season and a victory in the BCS Fiesta Bowl during his second and final year.

Amid a wave of open positions in Power 5 conferences this season, there are concerns that prominent programs like LSU, Penn State, and Florida may struggle to make impactful hires. Speculation has arisen linking Meyer, now 61, to potentially filling these roles.

In a recent interview with Kellyanne Stitts of ABC 6, Meyer was asked about the prospect of returning to coaching, particularly in 2026. He expressed a lack of interest, stating, “I don’t have a desire,” suggesting he is content with his current status.

Despite his hesitation to resume coaching, Meyer has indicated his support for a rising coaching star: Ohio State offensive coordinator Brian Hartline. Meyer praised Hartline’s development under head coach Ryan Day, stating, “I’m a big Brian Hartline fan… he just needed the experience.” He acknowledged Hartline’s decision to remain at Ohio State and believes he is prepared for a head coaching position.

With a remarkable career record of 187-32, Meyer ranks third all-time in winning percentage at 85.4%. While he may not be ready to re-enter the coaching world soon, his legacy and insight into football make him a prominent figure in ongoing discussions surrounding program leadership. The future remains open, and Meyer’s impact on the sport could continue to resonate, regardless of whether he returns to the sidelines.
