Upstate NY Braces for First Scorching Heat Wave of Summer!

Syracuse, N.Y. — Upstate New York is preparing for its first major heat wave of the season, which is anticipated to begin on Sunday and last through Wednesday. The National Weather Service has forecasted temperatures soaring into the 90s, with humidity levels potentially pushing the “feels like” temperatures to over 100 degrees.

Officials have expressed high confidence in the severity of the heat, urging residents to plan accordingly for a stretch of oppressively warm days, paired with little relief during the nights, where temperatures are not expected to drop below the mid-70s.

Unseasonably high temperatures in June are rare; Syracuse has only recorded three instances of consecutive days reaching 92 degrees or higher in the past 122 years. The last occurrence was just last year, from June 17 to 20.

In the lead-up to this heat wave, temperatures are expected to remain in the upper 70s and low 80s through Saturday, with afternoon thunderstorms possible. The onset of the heat is attributed to a strong heat dome moving into the Ohio Valley before settling over Upstate New York.

While the heat may be uncomfortable, it’s also a reminder of the changing seasons and the need to stay cautious and hydrated during such extreme weather conditions. Residents are encouraged to take precautions and stay informed about the weather forecast for a safe summer ahead.
