Upcoming Study to Transform Transport in Southeast Washington

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is initiating a critical study to assess the potential impacts on road and rail transportation if lower Snake River dams were removed and barge use was halted. To engage the public and share information about the study, WSDOT is hosting an online open house from November 15 to December 6.

This study, titled the Lower Snake River Dam Transportation Study, commenced in April 2024, marking the beginning of a four-phase approach. During this initial phase, WSDOT is actively collecting and analyzing data regarding the transportation of goods via barges, trucks, and trains. Community members can explore the current logistics of how products are transported in and out of southeast Washington through this platform.

The online open house will be accessible in both English and Spanish, allowing for a wider audience to participate. Attendees will have the chance to submit questions and comments directly to the project team.

For those who may lack internet access, WSDOT has arranged for free temporary WiFi hotspots available in various locations across the state. This initiative further ensures that everyone can have the opportunity to engage in this important dialogue.

The online open house serves not only as a platform for disseminating information but also highlights WSDOT’s commitment to inclusivity and community involvement. Engaging with the public in this manner could lead to more informed decision-making regarding the region’s transportation infrastructure, ultimately benefiting local communities and economies.

Individuals interested in participating can visit the online open house at the provided link for detailed information on the study’s background and future steps.
