Todd Harris is riding a wave of excitement as he prepares for the launch of “Eyes of Wakanda,” a four-part animated series from Marvel set to premiere on Disney+ on August 1, ahead of its original release date of August 27. The show has been a passion project for Harris since its conception shortly after the success of “Black Panther.” He debuted the series’ first episode at the Annecy Animation Festival earlier this year, but he has limited opportunities to discuss the project until now.
In an interview, Harris shared insights on his vision for the series, emphasizing the importance of expanding the world of Wakanda beyond what was seen in the films. “My goal for the whole show was to do the thing that a movie has trouble doing, which is making the world bigger,” he explained. The series offers a deeper exploration of Wakanda’s history and culture, focusing on Noni, portrayed by Winnie Harlow, who is depicted as a former member of the Dora Milaje and a candidate for the Hatut Zaraze—Wakanda’s intelligence agency.
The narrative kicks off in the year 1260 B.C. with Noni’s quest to confront a former Wakandan who has become a warlord, showcasing how the series intertwines historical context with fictional elements. Each episode of “Eyes of Wakanda” is set in a different time period, allowing for a broad exploration of Wakandan mythology and the notion that history is shaped by those who document it.
The character development is rich, with Harris referring to Noni as “a James Bond version of a Dora who just doesn’t toe the company line.” The series promises not only action but also a thoughtful examination of the truth surrounding historical events, addressing how narratives may vary depending on perspective.
In addition to Harlow and Cress Williams, the ensemble cast features notable names like Patricia Belcher and Anika Noni Rose. Harris also hinted at unexpected characters making appearances, suggesting an exciting exploration of Marvel’s lesser-known corners.
With an emphasis on action and character depth, “Eyes of Wakanda” aims to provide viewers with a fresh perspective on the beloved Wakandan universe, filled with thrilling moments and rich storytelling. Fans can look forward to experiencing a series that highlights the bravery and resilience of its characters—proving that even the unexpected heroes can deliver incredible feats.
