“Unveiling the Mystery: How a Yucatán Hacienda Shaped a Film’s Exclusive Island”

The island being referred to is fictional, created to evoke a sense of exclusivity and mystery. It serves as a location where escape is challenging and highlights the absence of medical professionals. The filmmakers initially planned for more beach scenes but eventually shifted their focus to a hacienda in the jungle that would not easily be recognizable.

Zoë Kravitz was instrumental in suggesting the use of a historically rich location during the scouting process in the Yucatán. This decision aimed to add complexity to Channing’s character, providing him with a background steeped in culture and history. After considering various haciendas, they settled on Temazon Sur, located about an hour-and-a-half south of Mérida.

Filming at Temazon Sur involved different groups, including construction crews and set decorators, culminating in a focused period with just the actors. The beautiful jungle setting, combined with Mérida’s vibrant dining and jazz scene, enriched the overall filming experience.

The choice of Temazon Sur was influenced by its striking red exterior complemented by white accents. The hacienda’s history of producing hennequin plants, used for making ropes and fibers, aligned with a thematic element in the film where the fictional island boasts a distinctive flower, tying the setting into the storyline.
