Unveiling the Legacy: Inside “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story”

The new documentary “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” brings to light the inspiring life of Christopher Reeve. Directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, the film chronicles Reeve’s rise to fame as Superman in the 1970s and 1980s, and the tragic horse riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down.

Reeve, who passed away in October 2004 at the age of 52, dedicated the remainder of his life to advocating for disability rights and finding a cure for spinal cord injuries.

On August 26, DC Studios released the trailer for the documentary, featuring heartfelt interviews with Reeve’s children—Matthew, Alexandra, and Will—as well as archival footage of the actor with his late wife, Dana, who succumbed to lung cancer in 2006.

In a poignant moment captured in the trailer, Reeve is seen reflecting on how Dana’s love reignited his will to live after his accident. He recalls a dark moment of despair, expressing feelings of loss and hopelessness, until Dana reassured him, saying, “You’re still you. And I love you.”

The trailer also includes touching memories from Reeve’s children, who highlight their father’s active lifestyle before his injury. They reminisce about riding bikes, playing soccer, and skiing with him. Matthew shares a memory of their last goodbye before the accident, noting, “He gave this wave. That was the last time I saw him on his feet.”

The documentary features commentary from Reeve’s Hollywood friends, including Susan Sarandon, Whoopi Goldberg, Jeff Daniels, and Glenn Close, as well as reflections on his special friendship with the late Robin Williams.

“Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” is set to screen in select theaters on September 21 and again on September 25, to commemorate what would have been Reeve’s birthday.
