OpenAI is unquestionably one of the frontrunners in the quest to achieve human-level artificial intelligence, and according to reports, it is just four steps away from this milestone.
This week, a spokesperson for OpenAI informed Bloomberg that the company has developed a five-level system to track its progress toward artificial general intelligence (AGI). These levels range from the current conversational AI to AI capable of performing the work output of an organization. OpenAI plans to share these levels with investors and external parties.
Currently, OpenAI executives believe they are at the first level. However, they are nearing the second level, termed “Reasoners,” which describes AI that can solve basic problems and is comparable to a human with a doctorate degree but without tools. The third level is referred to as “Agents,” which involves AI executing various tasks on behalf of a user for several days. The fourth level, “Innovators,” applies to AI that can contribute to developing new inventions.
Additionally, OpenAI demonstrated a research project featuring GPT-4, showcasing its human-like reasoning abilities. This information comes from a source familiar with the matter, as reported by Bloomberg. OpenAI declined to provide further comments.
The system was allegedly devised by OpenAI leaders and executives, who retain the flexibility to modify the levels based on feedback from employees, investors, and the board.
In May, OpenAI dissolved its “Superalignment” team, which focused on addressing AI’s existential risks. The company stated that the team’s responsibilities would be integrated into other research initiatives throughout OpenAI.
