A sculpture titled “Koan,” created by the late artist Bruce Johnson, has been installed at the head of the Joe Rodota Trail on Petaluma Avenue. Johnson, who passed away earlier this year, spent five decades working in Sonoma County, crafting large-scale, contemporary sculptures primarily from salvaged old-growth redwood, often accented with copper.
The installation of “Koan” was made possible through a competitive Call for Artists issued by the city’s Public Art Committee, which received approximately 30 submissions. After careful consideration, three finalists were chosen, and following public presentations led by Johnson’s daughters, Tori and Kendra, the committee and community feedback facilitated the final decision in favor of Johnson’s work.
Robert Brent, the committee chair, praised the sculpture for embodying the distinctive design elements characteristic of Johnson’s oeuvre, including a ball suspended from a copper-covered chain and a creative interaction between two logs. The piece cost $25,000, funded by the city’s “1% for Art” initiative, with an additional budget allocated for site preparation.
Brent also highlighted that this installation is part of a broader initiative to place prominent sculptures at each city entrance. Johnson’s work, celebrated for its organic forms and deep connection to nature, reflects his background in Zen Buddhism and is poised to enrich the community’s artistic landscape.
Fifth District Supervisor Lynda Hopkins commended Johnson’s contribution to the North Coast artistic community and expressed gratitude toward his family for allowing the public to enjoy “Koan” in the years to come. The Public Arts Committee is currently scheduling an official opening event for the sculpture, underscoring the community’s ongoing engagement with art and remembrance of Johnson’s legacy.
This installation not only honors Bruce Johnson’s artistic achievements but also enriches the cultural fabric of the Sebastopol area, providing inspiration and delight for residents and visitors alike. The community can look forward to further developments as the Public Arts Committee seeks to enhance the city’s artistic presence with future projects.
Summary: Bruce Johnson’s sculpture “Koan” has been installed at the Joe Rodota Trail in Sebastopol, CA, following a public selection process. The piece honors Johnson’s significant contributions to art and is part of a larger initiative to enrich the area with distinctive sculptures. The community anticipates an upcoming official opening event for the artwork.
