Unrivaled Women’s Basketball League: A Game-Changer for Athletes and Fans

Unrivaled, the groundbreaking 3-on-3 women’s basketball league co-founded by WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, is poised to make history as it kicks off its inaugural season. The league is designed to provide a platform for professional women athletes during the WNBA offseason, minimizing the need for them to play abroad.

Stewart emphasized the significance of Unrivaled, stating that it offers players a chance to stay stateside, earn competitive salaries, and continue to build their personal brands. With many players accustomed to overseas contracts, the establishment of this league represents a shift towards greater financial opportunities at home. Both Stewart and Collier bring international experience, having played in leagues in Turkey and France, respectively.

Unrivaled features six competitive teams, each comprising six players, and will initially spotlight 36 WNBA players, including the league’s founders. Notable players like Angel Reese, Sabrina Ionescu, Satou Sabally, Alyssa Thomas, and Arike Ogunbowale will also be part of the lineup, promising an exciting opening night.

The league introduces unique rules to enhance the fast-paced nature of the game. Matches will consist of three seven-minute quarters, leading to a final quarter that is not timed, where the winning score is determined by adding 11 points to the leading team’s score at the end of the third quarter. This format ensures a dramatic finish, as highlighted by Unrivaled President Alex Bazzell.

Salary-wise, Unrivaled sets a new standard for women’s sports leagues, with athletes earning an average of over $100,000, backed by a collective salary pool exceeding $8 million. Furthermore, players will receive an equity stake in the league and have the opportunity to compete in a 1-on-1 tournament with a $250,000 prize for the winner’s team.

Fans can catch live games airing on TNT or TruTV, with the season running from now until March 17. Former WNBA star Candace Parker will host a studio show during broadcasts, further driving interest in the league.

As Unrivaled takes the stage, excitement builds not only for the athletes but also for the future of women’s sports in the U.S. The league’s launch follows the WNBA’s record-breaking season, with increased digital engagement and attendance. With the upcoming WNBA season slated to feature a record 44 games, women’s basketball continues to grow and inspire.

In summary, Unrivaled’s debut is a pivotal moment for women’s basketball, promising a new level of visibility and compensation for female athletes while offering fans an innovative and dynamic game format. The league embodies hope and progress, fostering a future where women’s sports receive the recognition and support they deserve.
