Prosecutors concluded their case in the retrial of Karen Read, who stands accused of the murder of her boyfriend, John O’Keefe, a Boston police officer, in Canton more than three years ago. The trial escalated Thursday with the airing of an interview clip in which Read expressed doubts about whether she had accidentally struck O’Keefe with her Lexus SUV on the night of January 29, 2022.

In the emotionally charged video, Read pondered various scenarios regarding the incident, questioning whether she could have backed into O’Keefe unknowingly as she departed after dropping him off following a night of drinking. “Did he try to get [to] me as I was leaving, and I didn’t know it?” she asked, contemplating the chaotic conditions inside her vehicle at the time, which included loud music and heat.

Facing charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating under the influence, and leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death, Read has maintained her innocence. Prosecutors allege she acted in a drunken rage, deliberately backing her SUV into O’Keefe. Conversely, Read’s defense claims that O’Keefe entered another person’s home, where he may have suffered fatal injuries from a dog attack before his body was dumped outside.

In a critical part of the trial, a biomechanical engineer testified about crash reconstruction. Read’s attorney challenged the findings regarding contact between her vehicle and O’Keefe’s while introducing evidence that sought to question the prosecution’s narrative.

With the defense set to present its case soon, Judge Beverly J. Cannone noted that the trial is progressing ahead of schedule. The implications of this case are significant, as it encompasses elements of accountability, the complexities of perceived guilt, and the challenges of presenting forensic evidence in court.

As the trial moves forward, it raises awareness about the legal proceedings surrounding domestic violence and the importance of thorough investigation in high-stakes cases. The outcome may not only affect those directly involved but also resonate with broader societal themes of justice and truth.
