The Moscow Police Department has made available more than 300 police report files related to the University of Idaho murder case following the sentencing of Bryan Kohberger. On July 23, Kohberger received four life sentences without the possibility of parole for the brutal stabbing deaths of Xana Kernodle, Ethan Chapin, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves that occurred in their off-campus residence on King Road on November 13, 2022.
The released documents detail the police response from the first moment they arrived at the scene, along with interviews and the pursuit of leads related to the case. Although Kohberger has remained tight-lipped about his motive and has not provided a detailed confession, the reports meticulously outline insights shared by individuals who interacted with him prior to the killings.
One notable report involves a woman who matched with Kohberger on Tinder, revealing disturbing conversations they had. She recounted how Kohberger identified himself as a criminology student, and their discussions veered into morbid topics, including the murder of a friend from her town. The exchange raised red flags for her; she specifically recalled a moment where Kohberger asked her about the worst way to die, referencing a Ka-Bar knife, which later became significant as a sheath of that brand was discovered at the crime scene.
Additionally, the reports include observations from inmates who were incarcerated with Kohberger before and during his trial. Comments from these inmates painted Kohberger as socially awkward, with one labeling him a “f****** weirdo” while another described him as both “highly intelligent” and “annoying.” They noted his peculiar habits, such as frequently washing his hands and an unusual sleeping pattern where he would stay awake at night and nap during the day, spending an extensive amount of time showering.
These details collectively create a fuller picture of Kohberger’s behavior and personality in the lead-up to the tragic events, further underscoring the complexities of the case and the chilling aspects of the accused’s demeanor.
The release of these files provides ongoing insight into the investigation and serves as a grim reminder of the tragedy that befell the victims’ families and the community.
