As of Sunday, approximately 350 trekkers successfully reached the township of Qudang, while rescuers maintained contact with over 200 others still in the mountains. Chen Geshuang, part of an 18-member trekking group, described the treacherous conditions they faced, with harsh cold increasing the risk of hypothermia. This sudden and intense weather pattern was unprecedented for October, marking a significant departure from seasonal norms.
The snowfall began late Friday evening and continued into Saturday, creating dangerous conditions at altitudes averaging around 4,200 meters (13,800 feet). Chen’s group experienced a night of intense weather, accompanied by thunder and lightning, before descending safely and receiving warm hospitality from local villagers.

Amid these events, neighboring Nepal faced its own crisis, with heavy rains leading to landslides and flash floods that have claimed at least 47 lives since Friday. Separately, reports from India highlighted similar challenges, including landslides and severe flooding that have affected various states, demonstrating a growing pattern of extreme weather across the region.
