Unpaid Wages and Betrayal: The Dark Side of Nonprofit Employment in Durham

People in Durham have come forward claiming they were hired by a nonprofit, CJF America, only to face issues with unpaid wages after weeks of work. Investigations are currently underway by both the state Department of Labor and the Durham Police Department in response to the complaints.

Crystal Graves, who signed on as the executive director of CJF America in mid-May, described her role as pivotal in opening a community center and running a summer camp for children. She initially connected with Courtney Jordan, founder of CJF America, through a community event, which led to her hiring with an annual salary of $85,000. However, she noticed discrepancies early on, such as the absence of a budget for the camp. When it came time to receive her first paycheck, it was not only late but also bounced, leaving her $10,142 in debt.

Graves is a single mother, and she expressed the emotional and financial toll that this situation has taken on her and her children. She estimates that over 30 individuals are similarly affected and have been in contact with each other regarding their experiences.

Monique McKithen, another victim, was hired for a role with an annual salary of $70,000, intending to provide valuable community services to children. Like Graves, she has not received her due wages and shares a sentiment of betrayal and disappointment.

The investigations have revealed inconsistencies surrounding the legitimacy of CJF America and its ties to Courtney Jordan’s organizations, as filings indicate that while CJF America is recognized as a nonprofit, there are no records for a “Courtney Jordan Foundation.” Notably, CJF America was briefly dissolved in 2024 before being restored.

While police and labor agencies assess the situation, both Graves and McKithen hope that by sharing their stories, they can prevent others from falling victim to similar circumstances. Their courage in coming forward reflects a broader desire for accountability and transparency within nonprofit organizations.

This troubling incident underscores the importance of conducting thorough research before joining an organization, emphasizing the need for potential employees to verify the credentials and history of employers, especially in the nonprofit sector. The outcome of ongoing investigations may lead not only to restitution for the affected individuals but also serve as a warning to others regarding employment practices within charitable entities.
