The Fiji Police Force has taken significant steps to enhance its maritime enforcement capabilities through a comprehensive two-week training program focused on Vessel Board, Search and Seizure techniques. Conducted in Suva under the auspices of the UNODC Global Maritime Crime Programme, this intensive training emphasized advanced boarding exercises and the detection of concealed compartments that may be used for trafficking illicit cargo.

In a collaborative effort, officers from Fiji, Kiribati, and Nauru participated in this joint training initiative, which aims to strengthen regional cooperation in the fight against transnational organized crime across the Pacific. The need for enhanced collaboration is underscored by police officials, who believe that ongoing partnerships with the UNODC Global Maritime Crime Programme are crucial for improving responses to maritime crimes not only in Fiji but throughout the surrounding region.

This training effort received support from the Embassy of Japan in Fiji and was facilitated by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, further showcasing the international commitment to combatting maritime crime and fostering security in the Pacific Ocean. The insights gained from this training are expected to significantly bolster law enforcement’s capabilities, ultimately contributing to safer maritime environments.
