The identity of the officer from the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) who is allegedly involved with former journalist Charlie Charters in the unauthorized release of official information remains undisclosed. During a recent court session, Defense lawyer Seforan Fatiaki informed Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne that he had received additional disclosures from FICAC prosecutor Rusiate Doidoi regarding the case.

Charters faces two charges of aiding and abetting a FICAC officer in leaking official information, as outlined in Section 45 of the Crimes Act and Section 13G of the FICAC Act. FICAC claims that between November 2 and December 14, 2025, along with February of this year, Charters allegedly assisted a FICAC officer in committing an offense by disseminating sensitive information related to FICAC operations on his Facebook page without the requisite authorization from the FICAC Commissioner.

In addition to these proceedings, Charters has sought modifications to his bail conditions to allow for travel to Australia for employment purposes, a request the prosecution has opposed. Charters’s legal team indicates that he is a Hong Kong resident traveling through Fiji to secure his Fijian passport, while also needing to attend a work-related event in Sydney. It is notable that he holds dual citizenship in Fiji and the United Kingdom.

Although his bail terms have been extended, the case has been adjourned, with the next hearing scheduled for March 3. This situation underscores the critical importance of safeguarding sensitive information and the duties of individuals within public institutions. As the case progresses, it may serve to reinforce the standards and regulations regarding the handling of sensitive data, ultimately promoting greater accountability within public service roles.
