Unlocking Art: A Season of Impactful Stories and Innovation

BEYOND THE CANVAS returns with its third season, showcasing the finest arts and culture coverage from PBS NEWSHOUR’s CANVAS arts series. Each episode is themed, featuring artist profiles and personal stories that delve into various artistic concepts.

The first episode, titled “Art All Around Us,” premieres on Friday, August 23, 2024, at 9:30 p.m. on KPBS 2 and the PBS app. This installment highlights artists demonstrating that art permeates every aspect of life, from women big wave surfers to Latino baseball pioneers.

In the second episode, “Art: Innovated,” available for streaming on the PBS app, the show focuses on the innovative spirit of artists like comedian Ziwe, Grammy-winner Arooj Aftab, and Broadway star Andre de Shields, who are challenging the limitations of their respective art forms.

The third episode, “Art, To Change The World,” also available for streaming, explores art as a powerful social instrument capable of revealing hidden histories and inspiring change. The episode features insights from Academy Award-winning actor Riz Ahmed and portrait photographer Jess T. Dugan.

The fourth episode, “Art, Black Women Lead,” honors the significant artistic impact of Black women throughout history, which can be streamed on the PBS app.

Finally, the fifth episode, “Art, The Power of Words,” examines the influence of writers, poets, and lyricists who express their personal experiences through impactful narratives. This episode includes discussions with Brandi Carlile, Louise Erdrich, and Rissi Palmer, and is also available for streaming.
