The University of Utah has teamed up with EPIC Ventures, a venture capital firm located in Salt Lake City, to establish University of Utah Ventures, Powered by EPIC. This collaboration aims to merge the university’s innovation capabilities with EPIC’s comprehensive network, promoting growth for early-stage technology companies in sectors such as software, healthcare, life sciences, and financial technology.
University of Utah President Taylor Randall highlighted the significance of this partnership, stating, “University of Utah Ventures represents a transformative opportunity for both the university and the broader entrepreneurial ecosystem. By collaborating with EPIC Ventures, we aim to not only promote innovative breakthroughs within our institution but also drive substantial economic growth in the region.”
The fund will utilize nearly $700 million in research funding from the University of Utah and the extensive experience of EPIC Ventures in scaling businesses. The two organizations have previously worked together, specifically in supporting Recursion Pharmaceuticals, a company that has grown to become a $2 billion publicly traded entity.
Erin Rothwell, the university’s vice president of research, emphasized the importance of transitioning research into economic opportunity. “The venture fund is part of a broader strategic plan to enhance our technology transfer process and integrate commercialization earlier into our research pipeline,” Rothwell said.
The partnership has been facilitated by the Utah Venture Hub, designed to help faculty entrepreneurs connect with business experts and early-stage capital guidance. Jim Hotaling, associate vice president for commercialization at the university, described the fund as a key milestone in positioning the University of Utah as a leader in innovation and commercialization.
Nick Efstratis from EPIC Ventures echoed this sentiment, saying, “This collaboration is more than just an investment fund—it’s a strategic initiative to empower entrepreneurs and transform ideas into impactful businesses.” With almost 30 years of experience in early-stage investments, EPIC Ventures is well-equipped to support the goals of University of Utah Ventures.
Jefferson Moss, managing director of Utah Innovation Fund, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, stating that it would enhance the capacity to drive commercialization efforts and create an ecosystem that nurtures innovation while solidifying Utah’s role as a leader in translating academic research into tangible impacts.
