The University of Miami is implementing stricter regulations on the use of electric scooters, e-bikes, and similar personal mobility devices due to safety concerns and the increasing risk of battery fires. Starting August 19, students and staff will no longer be permitted to ride or park these devices in pedestrian-heavy areas such as sidewalks, breezeways, and the Foote Green on the Coral Gables campus.
The decision, announced by the university’s Parking and Transportation Department, aims to promote “safer, smarter mobility” within the community. The increase in reported incidents involving collisions with pedestrians, blocked emergency routes, and dangerous battery-related incidents has prompted this new policy. “This policy is about protecting the safety and well-being of our community,” the department stated.
As part of these regulations, all micromobility devices must be parked only at designated outdoor racks, indoor storage or charging of these devices will be prohibited, and they must be registered with the University of Miami Police Department. Violators can expect fines, impounding of their devices, or other disciplinary actions.
The crackdown on personal electric vehicles aligns with a growing trend among colleges nationwide, which are responding to the challenges posed by lithium-ion batteries and the surge in personal electric vehicle usage. The University of Miami already prohibits shared scooter services like Bird and Lime and does not intend to alter this policy.
To ensure compliance and promote safety, “Watch for Pedestrians” signs have been placed around Lake Osceola as the university emphasizes the importance of vigilance while navigating campus.
