Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia voiced his strong support for Vice President Kamala Harris during his address on the first night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
He stated, “Kamala Harris and Tim Walz represent the way forward. We’re not going back,” emphasizing the nation’s commitment to progress. Warnock highlighted Harris’s collaboration with President Joe Biden on initiatives like the insulin price cap and her key proposals aimed at reinstating reproductive rights across the country. He also had pointed criticism for former President Donald Trump.
“Individuals lacking vision thrive on discord. He is unfit to lead and seeks to create division,” Warnock asserted. “Let there be no mistake, Donald Trump is a plague on the American conscience.”
The senator reflected on his background as a reverend, addressing a moment that many Democrats have condemned: Trump holding a Bible in front of a church amid protests following George Floyd’s death in 2020.
“He should consider actually reading it. It instructs us to ‘Do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God,’” Warnock remarked. “It advises us to ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ It reminds us that ‘In as much as you’ve done unto the least of these, you have done it also unto me.’”
Concluding his speech, Warnock delivered a message of unity inspired by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I need my neighbor’s children to be well so that my children will thrive. I care about all children, including those in Atlanta’s underserved areas and in Appalachia. I express concern for the vulnerable youth in Israel and Gaza, as well as those in the Congo, Haiti, and Ukraine. It is crucial that all American children, regardless of their circumstances, are doing well because we are all God’s children.”
