Manchester United played to a 1-1 draw against Fenerbahce on Thursday evening.
The match began with visitors Fenerbahce taking the lead in the 15th minute, as Christian Eriksen found the back of the net after a swift team move. Despite Fenerbahce’s pressure for an equalizer in the first half, Manchester United’s goalkeeper Andre Onana made a remarkable double save to keep United ahead.
In the second half, Fenerbahce managed to level the score when Youssef En-Nesyri headed the ball past Onana. Former United manager Jose Mourinho received a red card during the second half after vocally objecting to a referee’s decision not to award a penalty. Nevertheless, Fenerbahce successfully defended for a draw.
The draw continued to highlight Manchester United’s troubling pattern of conceding goals shortly after half-time, with Fenerbahce equalizing just moments into the second half. In response, United’s manager Erik ten Hag made substitutions, bringing in Rasmus Hojlund and Casemiro. United shifted to a more familiar style of play, but struggled to create clear goal-scoring opportunities. Eriksen orchestrated play in the final third while Ugarte and Casemiro held back, with Ugarte having a standout performance that was crucial for the team.
Diogo Dalot’s struggles at right-back were evident as he lost his position multiple times, affecting both defensive stability and offensive rhythm. Current issues mean that United has not claimed an away victory in Europe since March 2023, and their position in the Europa League group is concerning.
Onana’s prowess in goal was on display with his vital saves towards the end of the first half, preserving United’s lead. He showcased his reflexes by stopping attempts from En-Nesyri, reflecting as one of the standout saves of the season so far.
Ten Hag also faced challenges due to the suspension of his captain Bruno Fernandes, opting to play Noussair Mazraoui in a more advanced role. While Mazraoui contributed to the offensive front press, his performance did not mirror Fernandes’ creative influence. Although he facilitated United’s opening goal through impressive counter-attacking play, he also showed why he isn’t a natural fit for the role.
As for Manuel Ugarte’s return to the starting lineup, he completed many essential defensive actions and was instrumental in maintaining possession and game tempo throughout the match.
After the game, Ten Hag addressed Antony’s injury, which sent the winger off with a protective boot. Ten Hag expressed sympathy for Antony, who had been training intensely and was eager to contribute.
Looking ahead, Manchester United is set to face West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday, October 27.
