Taipei, June 24 (CNA) – President Lai Ching-te urged unity among individuals identifying with the name “Taiwan” and supporters of the official name “Republic of China (ROC)” in their collective opposition to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and their commitment to defend Taiwan. During a speech at the Kuva Chateau Hotel in Taoyuan, Lai asserted that genuine advocates of either identity must stand against the CCP and protect Taiwan’s sovereignty.

This speech marked the second installment of Lai’s “10 Talks on the Country” series, focused on the theme of unity. He referenced the Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) Resolution on Ethnic Diversity and National Unity from 2004, underscoring that supporters of different Taiwanese identities should coexist respectfully.

In highlighting the spirit of resistance, Lai referred to a significant rally held by YouTuber Pa Chiung on April 19, which aimed to raise awareness about the CCP’s efforts to annex Taiwan. This rally saw individuals waving both ROC and Taiwan Independence flags come together to assert Taiwan’s sovereignty after incidents where residency permits were withdrawn from three Chinese women for promoting military takeover on YouTube.

Lai also recalled the “four commitments” proposed by former President Tsai Ing-wen during her National Day address in 2021, which emphasize the importance of a democratic constitutional system, non-subordination of Taiwan and China, resistance against annexation, and the resolution of Taiwan’s future by its people. He noted that public support for these commitments reached around 80% in a survey by Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council, highlighting a strong foundation for the country’s position.

As he concluded his address, Lai encouraged Taiwanese citizens to express their views through electoral participation, drawing parallels between active citizenship and the relentless process of forging a strong defense for Taiwan’s democracy and sovereignty.

This call for unity and active participation presents a hopeful path forward, as the Taiwanese people rally around a shared commitment to safeguarding their identity and future.
