United Airlines is gearing up for a historic Memorial Day travel period, planning to operate over 4,600 daily flights from May 22 to May 28, 2025. This ambitious schedule is expected to accommodate approximately 3.8 million passengers, marking the airline’s busiest Memorial Day week to date. Chicago O’Hare International Airport, United’s main hub, will experience significant passenger traffic, particularly on peak travel days.
In a motivational message to employees, CEO Scott Kirby emphasized the dedication of U.S. service members and highlighted his vision for United as a leading airline in the industry. The message also focused on the airline’s plans for a record-breaking summer season, reflecting confidence in the ongoing recovery of air travel despite previous concerns of a slowdown this past March.
United is projecting to fly an average of more than 540,000 passengers daily during this period, peaking at about 550,000 on Friday, May 23. Popular domestic destinations are expected to include cities like Orlando, Las Vegas, Boston, and San Diego, while international flights will target locations such as Cancun, London, and Frankfurt. This upswing in travel demand signifies a robust summer ahead for the airline.
In addition to increased flight volume, United is expanding its network significantly this summer. Between June and August, the airline anticipates serving 50 million passengers—3 million more than in 2024—along with launching 17 new routes to underserved cities such as Nuuk, Ulaanbaatar, and Faro. United aims to enhance its competitive edge, with up to 950 daily flights to 144 international destinations, many of which are unique to the airline.
As part of its evolving strategy, United is adapting its approach to policy under new U.S. leadership, shifting focus away from previous DEI initiatives while working to regain key slots and bolster operations at JFK and Newark airports through negotiations with officials, including Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
